Cafeteria Sustainability Experts Visioning Collaborative

A facilitated space for district leaders and community partners to share what’s working in the cafeteria - especially strategies that meaningfully engage students.

What this is

These are peer conversations, not presentations. We compare approaches, surface blind spots, and connect adult systems work to student-led action.

Who it’s for

District sustainability staff, food service & custodial leaders, and community partners working in or alongside school cafeterias.

Logistics

Groups meet one hour every other month by region. Join from the comfort of your office desktop.

“I really appreciate having an interactive forum centered on problem‑solving and student engagement rather than traditional presentations. The Collaborative allows me to connect with district peers in real time to ask questions, explore solutions, and share resources.”

-Janet Whited, Recycling Specialist,

Physical Plant Operations, San Diego Unified SD

"I highly value this dedicated and continuous time to meet and talk with colleagues on different areas of focus toward waste prevention. I have learned about new outside organizations to consider to advance this work, which I have directly contacted and am now working with. Hearing ways others have engaged students with fun activities and messaging helps me to improve our program elements. Lastly, it is grounding and beneficial to hear of others' challenges and victories with folks that really get it."

-Nancy Deming, Sustainability Manager,

Custodial and Nutrition Services, Oakland Unified SD

“It was inspiring to learn about outreach campaigns with students. I appreciate having a space where we can discuss problems and hear examples of student projects.”

-Rina Fa’amoe-Cross, C.E.M., Resource Conservation Specialist,

Facility Operations, Seattle Public Schools
